Police Beat Oddities

Posted in Education, Funnyon May 23, 2005

From the May 19th BYU Police Beat:

The corpses of two ducks, a male and a female, were found May 9 outside the north entrance of the Museum of Art. The cause of death is unknown. The bodies were properly disposed of.

So, who is smart enough to tell a male duck and a female duck apart, but can’t figure out how they died?

Rumors about compensation

Well, I just happened to pop over to provopulse.com, and found that a couple of my blog entries were linked to in an article over there. So I thought I would make some comments about whats currently going on with the University Villa situation.

Just after I sent my letter to University Villa, they put notices up on all of our doors saying that they were not held responsible for any damages or losses. This really upset me, especially since it says clearly in at least two places in the contract that they are responsible if the damages or losses are due to negligence.

So I took my letter and all correspondence to the BYU Off-campus Housing Office. They told me they would make some calls to the University Villa management, and suggested I take things to the BYU Center for Conflict Resolution. At the CCR I was given instructions on how to do mediation with the landlord to come to some sort of agreement over things. I won’t rediscuss the issues and my arguments here because they are in some of my other blog entries.

Within a couple days after this, things started to happen. The office finally did place office hours in its window, although my one attempt to find them in the office during their hours resulted in finding the office locked.

Most recently, however, I found out from another resident that they will be offering $40 to each resident that moved. The management hasn’t yet made it official, because they want to come around a talk to residents, or so the rumor goes.

Retaliation?

I was recently at a party to celebrate the official opening of the recreation room at my apartment complex, University Villa. The party wasn’t that bad, they had lots of pizza, drinks, and a movie.

Part of the party was a prize giveaway. There were little green sheets of paper where we wrote our name and apartment number. They were all on a paper plate. The office manager of the Villa, Scott, picked out a name for the foosball table giveaway. Then was the $50 rent credit givaway. They picked a couple names, but they weren’t present. Then he picked up an entry, looked at it very briefly, then announced that the entries should be mixed up. I watched him carefully set the entry far to the side, mix up the rest, then move the entry to the edge of the pile of other entries, and pick the winning entry out of the middle of the pile. While him reading the entry was slight, it was very obvious to the careful observer that he set the particular entry aside and specifically chose not to pick it.

I waited for Scott to leave the party. I had kept my eye on the entry that he specifically set aside. I got out of my seat, grabbed the folded entry, and returned to my seat. Only then did I unfold the entry to see that it had been mine.

Why would he specifically set my prize entry aside and not pick it? I don’t think I will ever know. Perhaps Scott doesn’t like my looks, or the fact that I showed up to the party early. I think it may be however, that he doesn’t like me due to the fact that I wrote a letter to the management asking them to be more accomodating and ammend the contract during contruction periods. Or perhaps because of the fact that I took this letter to the BYU Off-campus Housing Office and described for them what was going on. If this is the case, that he specifically singled me out because I did this, then it is certainly retaliation.

Of course I could never prove it. Nor do I really care… they are free to give their prizes away to anyone they want. The fact that I didn’t get the $50 rent credit doesn’t really bother me. What bothers me is the fact that I was singled out and targeted, perhaps for actions I did to protect my right and the rights of my neighbors.

Update (2005-08-01): I talked to Scott today. He assured me that he would never do such thing intentionally, and he gave me a $50 rent credit anyway to prove it. Maybe it was just a fluke that it was my name. Even though I leave my comments above (I don’t believe in deleting comments, its all archived somewhere anyway) I want to ask readers to take it under consideration that Scott told me today he didn’t do it purposefully and that he made proper amends for it.

Interview Tips

Posted in Businesson May 18, 2005

I’ve been doing a number of interviews recently, for a web developer position in the Chemistry Department.

I have two pieces of advise for those who go for any interview:

  1. Know what you know and know what you don’t know. While guessing might be cool on exams and tests, its not such a great thing during interviews. Your future employer doesn’t care if you are good at guessing, he wants to know if you know something or not.
  2. Study up. If you know you are going for a particular job at a particular company, read up on the company, see what they do, what they make, and that sort of thing. If the job description lists several skills, review those skills so that you can easily remember the terminology and concepts involved in case you are asked about them.

Hello Lord Venkman, this is your father, Darth Otter Pop. Resistance is futile; you will be subject to my mind control devices. Unless, that is, you use your aluminum foil deflector beanie. Mu ha ha ha ha.

Its been a long time
The watch spins round and round
Its been a long journey
The footsteps continue along the ground
Its been a long prayer
May He bless you
Its been a long shoelace
WHAT?

I guess my fingers just got all tied up.
