You minus I, a year-long reply

Posted in Writingson Aug 30, 2008

About a year ago, I told you, you’re wrong
I even wrote it in a poem or a song
Now I repent, and say you were right
But I’ll never forget that starlit night.

In time thats pass, I’ve still called you friend
But never an email, I did send
Here is an idea–I hope I don’t miss
I’ll add you to my Christmas card list.

Flash on the Nokia N810

Posted in Technicalon Aug 28, 2008

In my continuing evaluation of the Nokia N810 Internet Tablet, I was delighted to see that Adobe Flash was included as part of the web browser. This means that I can watch Strongbad’s Emails and Youtube from a device that fits in my pocket.

However, I am disappointed that the version of flash installed does not recognized the built in camera or microphone. This means that I can’t send video messages to my friends on Facebook.

So, plus on the fact that flash is included, but a small negative because the flash doesn’t support that camera.

Skype on Nokia N810

Posted in Technicalon Aug 28, 2008

I just received a Nokia N810 today for my two week evaluation. The first thing I wanted to do was to call home and brag to mom and dad. So I installed Skype and made the call. It was rather pretty easy. I went to the Skype website for the Nokia devices (following a link from the web browser menu) and clicked the download button. Then I had the option to open the install file which caused it to open in an application manager which downloaded and installed the Skype application for me.

Skype worked well… very nice audio using just the built in speakers and microphone. I talked to my mom for an hour and a half, with only some choppy audio for two brief moments.

I was disappointed that Skype didn’t take advantage of the built in camera to do video conferencing. This isn’t Nokia’s fault, but instead of Skype.

While Nokia primarily makes phones, they do make some non-phone portable devices, such as the N810 Internet Tablet.

The WOM World / Nokia website is loaning me an N810 device for two weeks for me to review. Seeing as I have many friends who have purchased iPod Touch devices for use as an internet tablet, my primary goal in reviewing the N810 will be to try and evaluate how it might compare against the iPod Touch.

If you have any “does it do …?” sort of questions about the N810, leave a comment and I’ll try to get to your request during my evaluations of the N810.

CSU kicker breaks arm

Posted in Sportson Aug 26, 2008

I just read from the Reporter Herald that Colorado State (football) kicker Jason Smith broke his arm, and he won’t be able to play in the game verses Colorado University.

I’ve seen other football players play with casts and be just fine. My question is, why would it matter if a kicker has a broken arm? For one thing, a kicker shouldn’t need his arm to kick. Secondly, a kicker should never be touched on the field.

Don’t lock yourself inside your car

I like reading the BYU Police Beats, but this one from June 2 got by me until I finally read it today. I kind of have a hard time believing it.

You’ve heard the one about the woman who locked herself inside her car with a dead battery and phoned for help to get out of the car, right? Well, it really happened in Orem Friday. The woman called police on her cell phone after her car battery died and efforts to unlock the doors to let herself out proved futile.

“Occasionally, a mother or father will accidentally lock their small child or children inside the car and urgent help is needed; however, we don’t often get these kind of calls for assistance,” Lt. Doug Edwards said in a news release. “I’m just glad she had a cell phone to call for help.”

Police arrived and tried to assist the woman, but she couldn’t understand the officers outside the vehicle. Using hand gestures, the woman instructed them to call her on her cell phone. After getting the woman on the phone, police instructed the woman how she could manually operate the lock mechanism on the inside door panel to free herself, police said.

“I’d hate to think that people could actually put themselves in jeopardy because they didn’t remember or understand that car door locks will work manually,” Edwards said.
