Hazardous Material

I frequently read the Police Beat from the BYU Newspaper’s website.  While the rest of the police beat is usually filled with thefts or people reporting a suspicious individual who could not be found by officers, this one made me smile:

May 13: An individual called to report a strong odor coming from somewhere inside the Tanner Building. Officers discovered it was only the maintenance crew unclogging toilets, bringing out sewer gas odors. That section of the building was aired out.

The funniest part was the title of the beat: Hazardous Material.

Always fantastic. But I’m pretty sure my favorite part is the making sure to note that part of the building was aired out. Naturally…

I’m pretty sure there was a conversation that went like this:

Bob: Hey Fred, do you smell that strong odor coming from somewhere inside this here Tanner Building?

Fred: That isn’t very business like. You should call the cops.

BYU Dispatch: BYU Police, what is the emergency?

Bob: There is a strong odor in the Tanner Building, send the cops!

BYU Dispatch: What sort of strong odor?

Bob: It smells like hazardous materials!

BYU Dispatch: I’m dispatching officers to you location immediately!

Officer Young: This here Tanner building smells like poop! I’ll investigate.

Plumber Joe: Oh, I’m just here unclogging the toilet!

Officer Young: Hazardous Waste Emergency! Air out this portion of the building immediately!

Fred: Officer Young, you saved the day by airing out this portion of the building so it no longer smells like the hazardous material called poop!
