Baseball, more than just a game

About the best ending for a baseball game is to be down, in the bottom of the nineth, with two outs and two strikes, three balls, with the bases loaded, only for the batter to hit a grand slam home run.

Tonight was almost as good. Bottom of the nineth. Down by one point. A play stole home to tie up the game. Two runners on bases: second and third. Two outs, with no balls, two strikes. Not exactly our strongest player up to bat, but he hit a home run to instantly win the game by three points. What an ending!

But there is more to baseball than the game. Its about who you watch the game with. I’m pretty convinced that even if the cougars had lost the baseball game, it still would have been the best baseball game I’ve ever been too.

It’s funny how some memories are forged almost by magic. Sure, there are those momentous occasions like prom or graduation when just living up to the surrounding expectations is cause for celebration. They just become a part of your mind, as if a place had already been made for them and they slide in as expected. But others come without fanfare. They surprise you…but not because they strike with utter intensity or fit the mold of prescribed gallantry. Instead they come with the smell of fresh dirt drifting off a recently wet field, the feel of mountain wind running across your bare face, the sound of a bat making contact for a home run, and the touch of a hand sharing your orange reese’s pieces. They’re calm, but sweet…sparked by the love of a game, but retained for the excitement of the experience, particularly that of the company.
