You’ve heard the one about the woman who locked herself inside her car with a dead battery and phoned for help to get out of the car, right? Well, it really happened in Orem Friday. The woman called police on her cell phone after her car battery died and efforts to unlock the doors to let herself out proved futile.

“Occasionally, a mother or father will accidentally lock their small child or children inside the car and urgent help is needed; however, we don’t often get these kind of calls for assistance,” Lt. Doug Edwards said in a news release. “I’m just glad she had a cell phone to call for help.”

Police arrived and tried to assist the woman, but she couldn’t understand the officers outside the vehicle. Using hand gestures, the woman instructed them to call her on her cell phone. After getting the woman on the phone, police instructed the woman how she could manually operate the lock mechanism on the inside door panel to free herself, police said.

“I’d hate to think that people could actually put themselves in jeopardy because they didn’t remember or understand that car door locks will work manually,” Edwards said.

Nov. 5-6: A 26-year-old male reported his wallet stolen after using it at the Creamery on Ninth East. His driver’s license, an American Express card, two debit cards, two credit cards and two Victoria’s Secret gift cards were in the wallet when it was stolen.

Sept. 15: A student driving a BYU box truck on the south side of the Eyring Science Center attempted to drive between two building and ran the truck into the awning connecting the buildings. When the student hit the awning he was thrown into the steering wheel of the truck and reported chest pain. The student was checked by BYU EMT’s and released. The damage is estimated at $10,000 to the awning and $6,000 to the truck. It was the student’s first day driving the truck.

The thing is, this isn’t the first time the awning has been damage by a trunk trying to drive under it. It was damaged about a year ago, and finally fixed up about last April. I haven’t seen the new damage–it seems quite a bit more extensive–but I think it is at least a little funny that this isn’t the first time it has happened.

The words that seemed a little odd to me are welcome back, and on-campus housing. This just seems a little odd to me because typically a large majority of those who live in on-campus housing are freshman, which means we wouldn’t be welcoming them back. Now granted, there are some students who are returning to campus who live in on-campus housing (many of whom live in Wyview which I argue isn’t really on-campus), but I’m just saying that the headline of the article could have been written to better fit the demographics.

July 18: A student reported to police that she was receiving excessive and annoying calls and text messages to her cell phone by four unknown individuals. Police contacted the individuals, whom happened to be EFY students, and questioned them. Upon investigation it appears the individuals got the students number by accident and had been trying to contact another EFY participant.

So in other words, all four individuals were trying to call and annoy another EFY participant, but they got the wrong number by mistake.

July 18: Officers were called to the central building of Heritage Halls to attend a meeting with EFY participants about the dangers of shooting people with air soft guns.

I “wonder” why on earth the EFY participants were having a meeting about the dangers of shooting people. Perhaps they were completely unarmed and theologically interested?
