The Nokia connected flawlessly to my home access point. However, in one of my class rooms, I couldn’t get it to connect at all.

My Windows Vista laptop identifies the access point security type as WPA-Personal with TKIP encryption. When I try to connect the Nokia to the access point it prompts me for a “shared key.” I input the access point password which is published (and used successfully on my laptop), but after a few seconds the Nokia comes back with “Network connection error.”

In my continuing evaluation of the Nokia N810 Internet Tablet, I was delighted to see that Adobe Flash was included as part of the web browser. This means that I can watch Strongbad’s Emails and Youtube from a device that fits in my pocket.

However, I am disappointed that the version of flash installed does not recognized the built in camera or microphone. This means that I can’t send video messages to my friends on Facebook.

So, plus on the fact that flash is included, but a small negative because the flash doesn’t support that camera.

I just received a Nokia N810 today for my two week evaluation. The first thing I wanted to do was to call home and brag to mom and dad. So I installed Skype and made the call. It was rather pretty easy. I went to the Skype website for the Nokia devices (following a link from the web browser menu) and clicked the download button. Then I had the option to open the install file which caused it to open in an application manager which downloaded and installed the Skype application for me.

Skype worked well… very nice audio using just the built in speakers and microphone. I talked to my mom for an hour and a half, with only some choppy audio for two brief moments.

I was disappointed that Skype didn’t take advantage of the built in camera to do video conferencing. This isn’t Nokia’s fault, but instead of Skype.

For one of my web developer projects, I’ve tasked myself with building a homepage similar to Google’s Personalized Home Page, now called iGoogle. I thought it would be great to provide various modules on the page, and that I could provide a custom set of modules based on audience.

Google has a nice set of modules, available for both iGoogle and the Google Desktop (which is part of Google Pack). These modules are called gadgets, and many of which can also be syndicated onto third-party websites.

For my homepage project, I thought about using a combination of custom gadgets as well as other third-party gadgets. However, in order to syndicate a gadget through Google, you have to provide gadget attribution back to Google. For a page with many Gadgets, this begins to look unprofessional.

That is why I started a project called whatsits. Whatsits are the same as gadgets, except I changed the name to differentiate between how they are served up. The whatsits project is hosted at Google Code Project Hosting.

The whatsits project provides a number of scripts that are used to take an xml gadget description file, and provide all the methods in order to serve up the gadget on third-party web sites, but without having to show any attribution back to Google.

The project is only one day old, but I’ve already been able to use it to serve a custom gadget up in an iframe. Currently, the biggest task of the project will be re-writing Google’s gadget javascript library, which I plan to do slowly as I need particular functions.

Anyone who would like to assist in the project can leave a comment and I’ll get a hold of you.

I noticed recently that Google has a web page widget for Google Talk. I have one major suggestion:

I manage an instance of Google Apps for Your Domain. It would be more than great if Google could work out an instance of the Talk Widget to work with a Google Apps domain. The widget could be either added to the customized Google Apps homepage, or it could even be added to another homepage for the domain.

This would add value to the Google Apps offering.

Another suggestions I have for using Google Talk as part of Google Apps is that the nicknames used with the Gmail component of Google Apps should also be used as nicknames for Google Talk. This way when I create and give out a nickname in my domain’s gmail, my associates can use that nickname to talk to me on Google Talk as well.
