Last Sunday I taught Sunday School in church, and I taught about the Atonement of Jesus Christ. Later that day, I got this little anonymous note which read:

Um, I was in your lesson today, and I just wanted to tell you that something you said today changed my life.

Isn’t that what gospel teaching is about? Teaching the Gospel such that it helps people better themselves?

Teaching focus on people

Today I realized that I need to adjusting my teaching style a bit. My last Sunday School lesson focused on methods of living the Gospel. I guess a lot of this comes from the fact that I’m an engineer, and I like seeing patterns and formulas in things. The focus on Gospel application isn’t bad, but I think I should build upon it.

I want to focus more on people. I want to focus on the people in the Gospel stories, and what they might have thought in their experiences. I also want to focus on the people learning the Gospel stories, and focus specifically on their needs, strengths, and learning tendencies.

One of the things I’m going to have to do to accomplish this is to learn how people learn, and what they need most from the Gospel, and work to teach them those things. I can ask people, “What was the most recently Gospel lesson you learned about, and what about it made it memorable?”

I hope that giving my lessons a people emphasis will help my teaching become more effective.

Honesty

The biggest lies can be the ones that are never spoken. These lies happen when we are dishonest with:

Ourselves
Our morals, standards, and values
Our relationship with our Heavenly Father

It is important that we view ourselves as children of the Most Supreme Father, and as such, we have great value. We need to treat ourselves and be honest with ourselves accordingly. We cannot let the pride of the world influence us into demeaning ourselves, lowering our morals, or forgetting who we are: children of God.

Renewal

One thing I like about the Gospel of Jesus Christ is the strong theme of renewal. Christ died on the cross that we might be renewed and cleansed of sin. When we are baptized, we renew ourselves and become Christians. He gave us the sacrament that we can renew the promises of dedication that we made at baptism. Repentance is all about renewing ourselves and our spirituality.

That is why I think of New Years as a spiritual holiday. People make new years resolutions. New years gives us an opportunity to give us something we don’t like about ourselves in exchange for something better.

When we compare the renewal that we consistently do as believers of the Gospel and the renewal that can happen at the beginning of every year, it seems to me that every January is a time to remember our Savior and His sacrifices that allow us to become better people.
