I’m from Oregon, and I’ve heard from my family about the recent storms and floods there. I’m also a ham radio operator, so when I read on slashdot how ham radio saved the day, I got excited. I remember 12 years ago being one of those ham radio operators helping out with emergency communications, and I remember listening in to the communications going out to Vernonia, Oregon and wishing that I could do more.

Today the Daily Universe covered the BYU Amateur Radio club and ham radio in a couple of articles:

Today I made a post to the BYUARC (Amateur Radio Club) mailing list announcing that I put up a new website for the club. The new site really isn’t really my design, I simply put some links and a title in a header frame while the content frame loads various Google services pages, mostly from Google Groups. The new site (or frameset if you want to call it that) can be loaded up at http://radioclub.byu.edu .
Although I would have liked to have continued with a custom website, I thought it was important to have stability and ease of use with the site. Google Groups Beta seems to provide a pretty good set of services for a club or group to share files or create web pages. I think once they can integrate a calendar into the mix, then they will have a full range of offerings.

If I’ve met Everett Curry, it was only briefly, but I have a lot of respect for him and what he wants to do for the State of Oregon. Curry is running toward Salem to be a State Representative.
Curry seems like a good, honest man with morals. His campaign has been clean; I don’t even know who he is running against, which is evidence that Curry has run a positive campaign. Curry also seems like he is a hard worker, without personal agenda, just trying to do the right thing.
I’ve decided without any provocation or incentive to write this blog post. I’m doing so because I really like Curry. Please join me in voting Everett Curry for State Representative.
If you would like to learn more about Everett Curry, please visit his election website at www.VoteForCurry.org . Oh, and he is a ham radio operator, which I think is pretty cool.

The webserver for radioclub.byu.edu recently got hacked through a php exploit in urldecode. I’m not exactly sure how this all worked, but I found that an irc bot was running on my server, and looking through the apache logs, I found that the exploit recently described as the howdark exploit. What is left to be determined is if the hacker got root access. In which case, I would have to reinstall the entire system and examine any migrated files. If I can determine that he did not get root access, then I can simply delete the files and fix the whole and hope other things like it don’t happen again.
I’ve also made sure that any other installations of phpBB2 hanging around on my other servers are either upgraded or deleted.
If anyone is running phpBB2 with a version less than 2.0.11, you really should upgrade immediately.

I found this joke here:
Q: How do you greet a ham radio operator?
A. With a short wave.
