Well I had a pretty good experience with University Villa today. It is nice to have something good happen here, so I thought I would write it in my blog. Scott came through our apartment today and made a list of various repairs that needed to be done, including a new stove.
But what was really great were the maintenance guys. Kyle and Ben were the names the the guys. They did a really great job. I haven’t inspected the quality of their work — I’m sure its pretty good. What really impressed me was that they were fast with getting on the job. I mean, Scott came through the apartment this morning and they had things fixed up the same day. Same day service is impressive. What was also really impressive is that they were great at explaining things. They seemed to take pride in their work. They showed me the work they had done and make sure that it met my expectations.
Anyway, if the service for fall and winter is like it was today, I will probably be glad that I signed a contract here.

Today I met with Scott, who is the new manager of University Villa. He has been the manager for about two weeks now. He told me that a lot of the problems with University Villa in the past were due to the old management. He made promises that things will improve around here with him as the new manager.
I am personally taking a wait-and-see approach to see if things actually do get better. After a difficult summer with all the construction and miscommunication, I am a little skeptical. I’m not completely buying it, but I’m giving the new management a chance to prove it and I guess we’ll see over time.

Oddly enough, I recently got an invitation from the “new Manager of 2 weeks,” [Name Deleted], inviting me to re-sign (spelled resign if you ask [Name Deleted]) and live at University Villa for Fall and Winter. I thought I had caused enough trouble for them by sending letters to the off-campus housing office and such that they wouldn’t want me living here any more, but they sent me one of their standard invitation letters anyway.
I’m actually thinking about doing it. They are giving a few good perks to residents who are returning: August free (including utilities and everything), and $220 rent for the entire contract period. When you figure that savings for August add up to about $200, and you amortize that amount over the rest of the 8 month contract period, means that the price for rent is less than $200 a month. That is a hard price to beat. Most other similar complexes are selling at $230+ per month.
So I am actually considering re-signing. I still think that [Name Deleted] is a liar and a cheat, but $30 or more a month is a lot to give up because I don’t like how this complex treats their residents.
The fact that they are giving away about $200 in discounts per person shows that they must really be desperate to sign contracts. From talking around, a lot of people who currently live here were not planning on staying. I think a lot of it has to do with how poorly things are run around here, especially during the construction.
I remember that they said near the beginning of their construction, “We are already spending $1.5 million on this project for the residents, and assume that is enough compensation.” It seems like to me that their construction project is costing them a lot more than what they quoted. Its cost them a lot of contracts, which is turn is a lot of money. I think they should have accepted my proposed contract amendment when I made it. If they had agreed so some of the requests initially, then they probably would have more happy residents who would have signed contracts. Then they probably wouldn’t be offering these big incentives to re-sign a contract.

Tonight we discovered that University Villa will be providing new shower curtains. Actually Scott told me like a week ago that he was going to bring us new shower curtains, but then he never did. But we found the curtains that they someday might give us. They have a nice BYU theme. Um. Yeah.
Oh, and today is my half birthday. Go me. Updated 20 July: Oh, and the picture is of my roommate Bruce and Emily.

Well, we’ve now been out of our apartment for four weeks, which is one week longer than three weeks. We have actually seen significant improvement over the last week. The tub and hardware seem fully installed, as well as the tub surround. However, they pulled out our toilet which is now sitting on the front porch. I do not know why they took it out, perhaps so they could paint the wall behind it. If they were to actually do work over the next couple of days, they might be done with everything they’ve destroyed in another several days.
However, I’m extremely disappointed that its been four weeks just to replace a bathtub. I would have expected in this amount of time that much more would have been done.
My biggest fear is that they will want to continue wanting to renovate even after we move back in. One day they will want us to move our stuff from here to there for them to do this, and then from there to here for them to do that. I just want to live in an apartment where I don’t have to be bothered constantly for their own interests.

University Villa, in its un-infinite wisdom, cancelled the party it had previously advertised. However, a number of residents decided that the party should go on anyway. Here are the details:
So everyone is invited, and it kind of sounds like fun, so you should come on down to the party at the UV!
Update (2005-08-01): The Villa actually did not cancelled the party. It may had seemed like it for a little bit that they did when I wrote this entry, but they party actually happened and was supported by University Villa. That is why the above text about they cancelling the party has been marked through.
