Dating for pre-arranged marriages

Posted in Insightson Dec 16, 2006

Today I thought up a troubling question; troubling only because I have yet to find an answer.

Do people in pre-arranged marriages need to date? If you were in a pre-arranged marriage, do you date and get to know your arranged fiance?

On one hand, dating can be a stressful activity, and one that could be avoided completely in a pre-arranged marriage situation. Not only that, but eliminating dating could be financially beneficial.

On the other hand, dating can be a fun activity where the couple can get to know each other. Even in a pre-arranged marriage, learning about the other person in various situations, including pre-marital and dating situations, could prove to be helpful later when married. Not only that, but the beginning stages of marriage can be difficult time merging two lives into a companionship, and dating before marriage could alleviate the difficulties during that phase.

Fortunately, this question doesn’t really need to be answered.

Confidence to staple

The Ensign is generally a good magazine. There was one article in the February 2006 issue that made me feel a little uncomfortable. It is found on pages 18-22. I stapled those pages shut, so they wouldn’t flip open and taunt needlessly.

I feel like blogging

I feel like blogging, but I have no idea what I should blog about. I don’t want to tell you what I’ve been doing with my Christmas vaction, because it is not that interesting. It certainly isn’t as interesting as some other people’s holidays.

Things are a little bit more stressful that usual. I actually have friends to play with. This is a change over last year when most of my friends were married, but then I made some more friends. My sister is getting married in two days. That is causing a lot of stress around the house.

beforeforever.byu.edu

I just came across this website: beforeforever.byu.edu. I think it is very funny that BYU would have a web site like this. I guess it shows some of the BYU culture. I heard today that 52% of BYU grads are married. This is in comparison to the national average of only 11%.

If I were pessimistic, then I would concentrate on the stat aht 48% graduate from BYU without being able to get married. Perhaps if they didn’t allow single women to take more than an average class load then they would be free more often to be asked out on dates and the married percentage would go up.
