Priesthood session for General Conference was really good. Here are a few notes:

Elder Cook told about the fire fighting heroes in Southern California and talked about the importance of following the words of the prophet.

Bishop Burton told us about the churches humanitarian efforts. He expressed appreciation for the good Samaritans. He said that in 2007, the church responded and assisted with 170 disaster events in 50 different countries. He said, “The things which you do for others remains your legacy.”

Brother Burges from the General Young Mens Presidency asked, “Do you know who you are?” He also talked about knowing who you are in the Great Plan and as a member of the Church.

Elder Mansen of the 70 talked about young deacons and their potential. He gave an example of the Savior, and what he did at deacon age.

President Uchtdorf advises us about the dangers of being just a few degrees off in course. He told us of the power of self-direction and told us to “Be anxiously engaged in a good cause.”

President Eyring talked on many subjects, including the temple being a place to gain a fullness of glory and eternal increase. He told us to study the word of God. He said that the priesthood is the power that God, through His Son, created the worlds.

President Monson told us to ask ourselves, if we are worthy servants of the Lord. He told a story of him at a meeting where a boy was imitating his every posture. If he would cross his legs one way, the boy would do the same. President Monson said this continued until he wiggled his ears, which the boy couldn’t imitate. President Monson wiggled his big ears for us in demonstration and articulation in his story. (It was funny.) He told this story to help us understand the examples we must be for others. He also said that we should, “Determine to prepare for our time of opportunity.”

President Packer of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles spoke at BYU today at the weekly devotional. Below are some of my notes from his talk:

When he was in institute, he decided to live the gospel and not be ashamed of it.

He talks about serving in the war, and how he was involved in an activity of destruction without becoming destroyed spiritually himself.

He says that we are involved in a spiritual war that will never end. There is nothing innocent about our war. The world seems to be turned upside down. Rules of basic morality are ignored. We have decisions every day to follow the trends of the world or not.

Tells story of Joseph F Smith after his mission as a mail carrier and how he confronted a mob of drunks by standing up for his convictions.

Talks about the iron rod. Important word: after. After implies consequences. Answer: we heeded them [the wicked] not.

One his classmates graduated and rose to position of prominence, and started following the ways of the rule. Finally he let go of the iron rod. He fell away and was lost.

Largely because of television: we can live inside the great and spacious vision.

Sometimes things are as simple as dressing nicely and modestly.

Did Joseph Smith write the tree of life vision story. Unlikely. He was only 24 when the book was published.

Ways to hold on: Dress modestly, honor the priesthood, honor parents, read scriptures, pray: always pray. An unseen power will hold your hand as you hold to the iron rod.

We can feel our way ahead through live through the power of the Holy Ghost.

We live in a time of spiritual war. Moroni warned us of secret combinations and they are had among all people.

Atheists make non-belief their religion and attack faith and belief. They pursue political power and we will hear much from and about them. They mock religion. Their arguments are not indifferent from those of the antichrists in the book of mormon

All of the mocking does not come from outside of the Church. Be careful not to fall into that category.

We live in an interesting generation with constant temptations.

Never be ashamed or embarrassed about the standards of The Gospel.

You have the advantage to be assured that you can be inspired in all your decisions (including finding an eternal companion).

The Lord has reserved special spirits at this time to ensure His kingdom is protected.

The full text and audio will someday be posted at speeches.byu.edu.

Greg Kroah-Hartman came to my Open Source Software Engineering class today. Here are a couple of interesting thoughts that I’ve been able to gather from his presentation:

New patches are tested with Andrew’s mm kernel, and if they work out, then they are sent to Linus’ kernel.

Time between kernel versions should be about two months.

1475 unique contributors in one year alone

Grew kernel 6% in one year

2.6.18.y kernels are bugfixes only

Powerful to have a set list of rules so it is easy to say no to people

Day job: in charge of all SuSE kernel developers. All work remotely around the world.

Distros like to maintain an enterprise kernel for up to 7 years, which is crazy

E*Trade uses Gentoo because they can control it.

Modular kernel which little interconnectedness which makes it easy to have module maintainers who don’t

Tools: git, quilt, sparse

Linus’ main job: say no

Linux isn’t developed, it evolves. This means that there really isn’t a firm development plan.

Can’t go by time anymore with git

Signed-off-by is a blame path which create a reputation based system for submitting patches

The IDE module guy three times has gone crazy

Contributors have to defend their code

No development tree makes the engineering process more careful. Things have to evolve gradually with small changesets.

All the drivers are in the tree. This means that if you change an API function, then you can go and change all the drivers that use that API just like that.

People who work on open source projects are much more likely to get jobs, because you have currently shipping code.

Learn about licenses, they are very important.

Xen is a good example of running an open source project the wrong way. There are political and social reasons why.

Romeo and Juliets families are bitter enemies, for no good reason. Romeo sneaks into a party and meets Juliet. There is always a tention that builds against the young lovers.

Ordinary characters speak in prose. Those who are more involved in plot, speak in a more rythmic pattern. When Romeo and Juliet speak, (S. wants to stop the work in almost a bubble where no one else interferes), they speak in full rhymed verse.

Romeo means pilgram.

Sonnets.
A,B,A,B,C,D,C,D (last two wrap up the whole thing), scene in the beginning, complication, then resolve.

Sonnet 29 is a love sonnet.

S. solidified the English language (Like Dante for Italian and Luter for German). Coined 2000 new words (cretical, obscene, forfathers, frugal, summit…).

Why did S. write 37 plays and draw from resources of mind and vocabulary? He had to make a living and support his family. He really did love language and drama. He also wrote as fulfilment of duty to friends.

It is kind of sad that he didn’t spend much time with his family.

English language was solitified through the KJV. Wycliffe (1378) did first translation, and Tyndale version expanded/refined it a little bit. KJ I assembled group of scholars, and told them they could look at any version of bible (English/Lutheran), and wanted a version without commentary nor side notes. Go back to orginal greek or hebrew as much as possible.

Adonai (Hebrew word for Lord). Germans took german verson of YHWH (JHVH) and used vowell from adonai.

Some Hebrew idioms were used in the KJV, and translated directly: to fall flatt on his face

Also greek influences “and it came to pass”

Elizabeth was born illegitimatly under catholic system, so she was considered an illegit queen. Used female friendliness with different sides of the court. Also went out and visited the people and was friendly with them and gained popularity.

Lived free by visiting Lords.

Just jumped out of the war.

Raised level of merchant class.

Started privateers – sanctioned pirates – attacked spanish

Religious problems – didn’t enact revenge, but desolved ites to catholicism. The puritan zealots (calvinists) wanted revenge.
