I’m an Oregonian resident

Posted in Educationon Oct 25, 2006

After almost two months of work and waiting, I finally found out today that Portland State has recognized me as a resident of Oregon, which basically means that I pay less tuition. I’m glad they were so wise. I would hate to have had to use a picture of my webbed toes in an appeal.

I’m voting for Oregon Measure 43

Posted in Politicson Oct 24, 2006

Oregon Measure 43:

Requires 48-hour notice to unemancipated minor’s parent before providing abortion.

Currently in Oregon, anyone 15 years or older may consent to and obtain an abortion without parental notification. So let me get this straight. If you are 15 and miss a day of school, the school phone robot calls home to let the parents know. If you are 15 and want to get a body piercing, you have to have parental consent and accompaniment. But if you are 15 and want to get an abortion, the parent doesn’t even need to be notified.

I’m voting in favor of Measure 43. It just makes sense that a parent of a minor should at least be notified before their child gets an abortion.

I’m voting for Everett Curry

Posted in Politicson Oct 6, 2006

Vote for Curry If I’ve met Everett Curry, it was only briefly, but I have a lot of respect for him and what he wants to do for the State of Oregon. Curry is running toward Salem to be a State Representative.

Curry seems like a good, honest man with morals. His campaign has been clean; I don’t even know who he is running against, which is evidence that Curry has run a positive campaign. Curry also seems like he is a hard worker, without personal agenda, just trying to do the right thing.

I’ve decided without any provocation or incentive to write this blog post. I’m doing so because I really like Curry. Please join me in voting Everett Curry for State Representative.

If you would like to learn more about Everett Curry, please visit his election website at www.VoteForCurry.org . Oh, and he is a ham radio operator, which I think is pretty cool.

T minus thirteen hours

Posted in Lifeon Aug 18, 2006

In about thirteen hours, I check out of University Villa. I’ll probably be packing and cleaning for the next 12 hours straight. After I leave, I’ll be homeless in Provo. I’m transferring to Portland State University, but I don’t leave for Oregon until about August 30th. I have a tent and a sleeping bag all ready. Check back on my blog to see how living with out a home goes for me.

Thursday I went out to hike the Y. Of course, this isn’t my first time hiking the Y. I think perhaps it is the 4th or 5th time this summer. Last time, I hiked it in 29 minutes, which was really difficult and at the time I didn’t think there was any way that I could make it in less that 30 minutes, but I did. This time, I was a little more confident after hiking Kings Mountain in Oregon last week, so I set a goal for 15 minutes.

I set my stopwatch, and decided to only take my one liter water bottle. I started at about noon, and the temperature was about 80 degrees. I hiked solid, only stopping for a few seconds at a time to swallow some water. With the stopwatch as a constant reminder to my 25 minute goal, I kept up a solid pace, and if anything, increased my pace over the duration of the hike. I reached the Y at the zeroth second of the 25 minute of my hike, with about half a liter consumed out of my bottle. I was pretty tired when I reached the top. My heart was going pretty fast and I definitely needed the 10 minute rest once I got up there. The hike back down lasted just about as long as the hike up, mostly because I was taking a fairly safe pace for hiking downhill.

Happy Birthday Oregon!

Posted in Generalon Feb 14, 2006

For those of you confused about the holiday which comes every year on February 14th, let me educate you.

Today is Oregon’s birthday. I already have my oregon flag hanging from the wall, more proud than a Texas flag. 147 years ago, Oregon became a state, but not without some controversy. In 1859, the balance of power in the United States was carefully balanced between those opposing or supporting slavery. While the Compromise of 1850 dictated that Oregon would be a free state, its two newly elected senators were proslavery Democrats. However, congress finally acted and on February 14, 1859, President Buchanan signed the bill, causing Oregon to be the 33rd state.

I thought I would share some ideas about how to celebrate this very special day:

  • Think about all the things you like about Oregon
  • Bake an Oregon birthday cake
  • Fly the Oregon flag. If you don’t have an Oregon flag, print a picture of one off of the Internet and proudly display it
  • Hate Utah drinking water
  • Hug a tree
  • Recycle
  • Ride your bike to work or school
  • Use an computer powered by an Intel processor
  • Make Oregon cards and give them to all of your friends
  • Kiss someone romantically under some Oregon grape.
  • Purchase or consume some Western Family food products
  • Adopt a salmon
  • Convince someone else to pump your gas for you
  • Sing the Happy Oregon Day song.
  • Read blogs of Oregonians

One of my cats

Posted in Lifeon Jan 26, 2006

Cat Over the last couple of weeks, I have been trying to figure out what is wrong with my blog. People have stopped visting it. So I thought I would add a picture of my cat to see if that would help at all. So this is my cat Gilligan. I think the name comes from the old TV series, Gilligan’s Island.

This cat is home in Oregon, so I only get to see it about once a year.
