Last spring I set a goal to review all the most recent LDS general conference talks before the October conferece, which is scheduled to occur this weekend. Yesterday, I finished that goal.

I probably would not have been successful with out a site I created called ScriptureCast.net. This site allows anyone to create a custom-rate podcast of general conference. Last April, I created a ScriptureCast podcast which would feed out general conference talks at just the right rate so I would finish by the end of September.

For those who are not familiar with what a podcast is, you should educate yourself by reading “What is Podcasting? ” over on the LDS Media Talk blog. Be sure to watch the short three minute video, Podcasting in Plain English, posted there, but also available on YouTube.

I subscribe to my ScriptureCast podcast through Google Reader. Every few days, a new general conference talk comes up in my unread list, along with an embedded audio player. When I have time, I listen to the talk right from Google Reader.

Because this has been so successful for me personally, I plan to add the October conference to ScriptureCast.net, just as soon as the individual talk audio files and texts are available on the LDS.org website.

A few months ago I announced the release of a new website, ScriptureCast.net. Since then, things have taken off. The site has been featured in the ldsWebguy blog as well in the More Good Foundation blog. I’ve also received numerous emails praising the site for helping people study the scriptures.

The stats for the site have also been encouraging. In the last three weeks alone, there have been over 100,000 seconds of audio downloaded. There have also been a couple of hundred custom feeds created since the launch of the site (although I don’t have the stats indicating how many of those feeds are still active).

ScriptureCast.net currently can create feeds for The Book of Mormon, The Doctrine and Covenants, and the October 2007 LDS General Conference.

My next plan for ScriptureCast.net is to provide the audio for “Teaching of the Presidents of the Church: Joseph Smith”, and set up a feed that is synchronized with the standard lesson schedule.

You can read more about my progress at the ScriptureCast development blog.

Recently The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints had their fall General Conference, and they have just released the audio files of the various talks given on their website. The audio files are a great way to review General Conference material.

I’ve been working on a site called ScriptureCast.net which can create podcasts of the scriptures at custom rates. I’ve recently added the recent General Conference to the list of sources available for podcasting. Now you can subscribe to a custom podcast which feeds the talks to you at (almost) whatever rate you want.

I’ve just subscribed to a feed which starts with the Saturday morning session, and will give me a custom rate of talks so that I’ll finish the last talk just before the next General Conference in April, 2008. This way, I can study the conference talks all year round.

<ins datetime="2008-04-06T07:59:16+00:00">Update April 2008</ins>. I plan on putting the April 2008 LDS General Conference talks up on ScriptureCast.net just as soon as the individual talks are made available in MP3 format.

Sometimes, some of us need a little help remembering to keep on top of our daily scripture study. To assist in this, I’ve built a new website at ScriptureCast.net . This site helps you to create custom podcast feeds of the scriptures to help you stay on top of your scripture reading.

What is a podcast feed? A podcast feed is a frequently updated file on the Internet which contains information about recently posted items. In the case of ScriptureCast.net, each item is a chapter or section of scripture. Each feed item contains both a summary, and a link to the full text of the chapter or section. A podcast feed item also contains a link to the sound file for the chapter or section. See the Wikipedia Podcast entry for more information.

How do I use a podcast? You need a podcast program, feed reader, or news aggregator. Not all feed readers are the same, and not all will let you download or listen to the audio. iTunes is a good program for subscribing to podcasts, especially since it allows you to listed to podcast items on your iPod music player. MyYahoo! is a web based service which can also help you access the full text or audio. If you don’t care about listening to the audio and you just want links to the full text, you can also subscribe to the feed using any number of regular news aggregators, including Google Reader.

Why would I want to podcast the scriptures when I can put them on my computer or iPod manually? Most podcast software keeps track of which items you’ve listened to. This makes it easy to keep track of what chapters you’ve read and which chapters you have yet to read. In addition, if you have a small portable music player, such as a 1GB iPod Nano, you may find it difficult to keep the scriptures and all your music on the player. In this case, the podcast software adds items to your player as they become available, and removes them from your player when you are done with them.

I have a question about ScriptureCast.net that I would like to ask. Leave a comment below and I’ll try and answer it. If it is a good question, it might become part of the documentation.

I have a suggestion or feedback about how to improve the web site. You can leave your feedback on the official ScriptureCast.net development blog.

Is the site in beta? What does beta mean? The site currently is in beta, which means that there are still a few things to be worked out and still some features that need to be added. While the site is in beta, you might find things rearranged or changed, but I’ll make every effort not to disrupt service.

Well tonight was the premiere of all new episodes on Scifi Friday.

Stargate SG1 didn’t meet my expectations. Its almost like a brand new series, and most scifi series aren’t very good for the first couple seasons.

Lt. Col. Mitchell is a nice character, and I think that once he gets some rhythm with the other characters that he will be great. I think that his relationship with the other characters needs to be established more. The new General is pretty good. He seems to have more depth and action that Gen. Hammond did. The Vala character unnerves me. She seems too preoccupied with lust which is distracting for the show and makes me uncomfortable. Its almost like the writers are trying too hard to put some appeal for hormone driven males.

The storyline for the first episode was also disappointing. A treasure hunt is not the most exciting thing and didn’t seem very original. I was also hoping for more explanation why all of a sudden everything has changed. Why did O’Neil quit all of a sudden, and weren’t him and Carter getting together?

Ahh! Transition woes. Perhaps after all the excitement the last 5 episodes of last season, the new season seems kind of dull.

Stargate Atlantis Tonight’s episode was great. Although I’m a little disappointed to find out that their cliff-hanger of last season was solved simply by a sudden arrival of the starship from Earth. I mean, it was kind of predictable, I was hoping for something a little more surprising. But that is about my only complaint.

The whole Lt. Ford deal going bad was a great twist. Having the captain of the Starship seems like a great character, and I hope they keep him around. New characters seem like they will do well with the series, the story plot of tonight’s episode was great and exciting. I hope that this season will be full of adventure and not full of some alien power fog.

Battlestar Galactica. I was glad that finally Number Six’s role was family appropriate. And I just saw that there is a director’s commentary downloadable through a podcast, so I might actually watch the episode again tonight.

Tonight’s episode picked right up where we left off. It was a normal level of excitement, pretty good stuff. I wanted to see a little bit more time spent on Starbuck’s adventures on Caprica. Overall, a pretty good episode, better than most, but not anything I would write home about.
