“Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son.” (1 John 2:23)

“For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist.” (2 John 1:7)

John uses the word antichrist to describe anyone who would assume of guise of Christ, but in reality would be opposed to Christ. The Book of Mormon tells of a few antichrists.

Jacob 7 tells of an antichrist named Sherem. We read that Sherem declared that there should be no Christ (verse 2), and that he was learned, used flattery, and much power of speech (verse 4). Sherem taught that there was no Christ (verse 9), and he believed in but didn’t understand the scriptures (verses 10 and 11). In the end, the power of God came upon him and he fell to the earth, and finally confessed his deceit and lies to the people just before giving up the ghost.

Alma 1 tells of Nehor, who was large and strong (verse 2), and declared that every priest “ought to become popular” (verse 3). He convinced many to pay and support him for his teachings (verse 5) to the point where he was prideful, wore expensive clothing, and started his own church (verse 6). In the end, Nehor murdered Gideon, a man of God, and before suffering and ignominious death, acknowledged that he taught words contrary to God.

Alma 30 illustrates another antichrist in the story of Korihor. Korihor taught that there would be no Christ (verse 12) and called belief in Christ “foolish traditions” (verse 14). He lead the people way into wickedness and sin (verse 18) and taught that there was no sin (verse 17). Korihor brought “many souls down to destruction” by lying and flattering words (verse 47). In the end, Korihor was struck dumb and could not talk (verse 50), but admitted that the devil deceived him (verse 53), and went from house to house begging for food (verse 56).

School was good today, I actually got some good studying done on the train to school. Solid state physics is all about crystals. Mostly silicon crystals, although sometimes we talk about hard carbon ones.

Its another rainy, blowy, Oregon day. I really like it, especially with the new waterproof coat that I bought myself. It is a little chilly, but I just put my hood on, and all the wind and the chills and the rain stay outside, and the good warm feelings stay inside.

As soon as I got home, I got this incredible desire for pie, specifically, pumpkin pie. The Sara Lee pumpkin pie went even more on sale this week, and is now less than a dollar fifty per pie. But the thing is, I know I should be cutting back on sweets and things so I don’t get fat. I mean, what girl is going to marry a fat Jacob? So I want the pie, but when I compare the options of a piece of pie against eternal companionship….. but there are no promises that the pie will make me fat or that I’ll ever get married, so it’s not really a competition like that. I don’t think I have any whipped cream, and that could be a problem. What I really want is just for someone to give me permission to eat the pie.

I wouldn’t feel so guilty about eating pie if I was more active. I really want to hike a mountain, but I have no one to go with me.

We talked about the creation in institute class today. I can’t believe how much people on both sides of the evolution topic get worked up. I know I’m a child of God. I exist. All the little details about how Adam was created…. well, if it was important to my salvation, then it would be in the Book of Mormon.

I visited one of my favorite places, the Salt Lake City Library. I got a nice tour of the Beehive House which was Brigham Young’s house when he was governor of the region. I also got a tour of the Conference Center, where I saw the originals to some of my favorite Book of Mormon artwork. I also hiked Ensign Peak just about the time the sun was setting. Overall, it was a good adventure with some good company.

In my two year missionary experience in Romania, there was a missionary theme or technique we had called Proselyting for the elect. In general, it said that if we were trying to find the elect of God, we should be bold in challenging them to do the things they needed to gain a testimony such as read the Book of Mormon or attend church. The idea was that the elect would use these challenges to gain a testimony and become strong members in the church.

There was once a sarcastic comment made more than once that said that we should board ourselves up in the chapel and wait, because the elect would tear down the doors to hear the gospel. Of course that was ridiculous to think that way.

I’ve heard a similar comment from some girls, who say that they shouldn’t have to dress up or put forth effort to look pretty, because that is not who they really are, and if someone were to love them, then he would love them for who they really are.

So girls, if you are going out to socialize with those from the opposite gender, don’t metaphorically board yourselves up the the chapel. Look nice, be nice. You don’t need to be someone else, just be yourself and be your best.
