One of my readers wanted to know about fees at University Villa in Provo, Utah. While I’m not the authoritative source, I thought I would share what I know.

Every month, there is a $10 communications fee in addition to rent and utilities. A semester parking sticker costs $15. Failing a cleaning check is suppose to incur a $5 recheck fee. Failing a cleaning check twice usually results in cleaning charges which is variable depending on what needs cleaning. Paying rent late incurs a $20-25 late rent fee.

Parking after midnight with out a permit risks getting a boot on your vehicle, which results in a $55 fee to University Parking Enforcement.

Camping in the Cove

As part of my homelessness, I spent a night camping out in an area in between a couple of University Villa buildings known as the Cove. We had a campfire in the barbecue, pizza, croquette, a shopping cart, and a tent to sleep in. It was more of a party than anything else, so it was pretty fun.

Homeless day one

So Maria finally came around at about noon on Saturday, and gave me a perfect checkout. In 30 days (according to the PDF of the BYU Housing Handbook) I should be getting my deposit back, less some money for the last month utilities.

So ever since then I’ve been homeless. I found an apartment that I previously crashed in to crash in again. The only problem is that there hasn’t been any hot water, so my shower was kind of chilly. I guess I can’t complain since I’m not really suppose to be crashing here anyway. Another disadvantage I found was that it was difficult to get the wrinkles out of my white shirt for church.

People seem to be helping me in simple ways. I got a Slurpee within an hour of being homeless. Ryan shared some milk to use with my cereal, and Carson provided the pasta for my Alfredo sauce for dinner.

I’m out! I didn’t sleep a wink, I didn’t even slow down. Everything is out, all my cleaning assignments are done. My neighbors are serving breakfast, which is good. Now I just need to figure out where I’m sleeping tonight.

Maria is suppose to come by to check me out of my apartment. I told her that I would be ready at 10am, which I am, but I wonder when she will actually come around.

Well, except for the vacuuming in my bedroom, all my cleaning assignments are finished. Now all I have to do is get my stuff out. One of my neighbors who works really early mornings cleaning the Wilk was just getting off work and was surprised that I was still at it. In five hours, I can surely get everything out.

Wrapping aluminum foil around the stove burner pans is an art.

I’m still awake and kicking. I finally have everything out of my room and the room is all cleaned up. I just need to vacuum it, and I’ll wait for my roommate to wake up before I do that.

I just have to clean the oven, and get all my stuff from the living room to other places outside the apartment and I’m done.

My roommate Jason left without checking out, and he was suppose to clean the rest of the kitchen, so I really don’t need to worry any of that, because he will just get cleaning charges taken out of his deposit and that is that.

In about thirteen hours, I check out of University Villa. I’ll probably be packing and cleaning for the next 12 hours straight. After I leave, I’ll be homeless in Provo. I’m transferring to Portland State University, but I don’t leave for Oregon until about August 30th. I have a tent and a sleeping bag all ready. I’m pretty critical sometimes on my blog here about the various things that people do wrong. Tonight I want to mention something I think is a good idea.

Many apartment places threaten their residents during cleaning inspections. University Villa the last few months has found a positive way of encouraging residents to pass their monthly cleaning checks during the first inspection. Every month they do a drawing of people who passed their checks the first time, and 5 people win free pizzas. This is a great simple way of encouraging people to keep their apartments orderly. It is far better business to encourage people this way than by threatening them with punishments for failing to complete their cleaning assignments.

By the way, there are still negative consequences for not passing cleaning checks, but they aren’t the focus of the encouragement.

Residents of University Villa who re-sign their contracts for spring and summer not only get a 93 dollar a month rate, but the following benefits:

A lounge that is closed when residents are most likely to use it.
A complex office that often is closed or hard to reach
Telephone and internet service that less than fully work
Shared vacuums that often do not work.
Bad booters
$10 fee for paying rent online
Small kitchens with little shelving
Vague utility bills
Great laundry facilities where maybe half of the driers are actually working.

Valentines Dance

Almost as bad as halloween dances are valentines dances.

University Villa tried having a valentines dance tonight. As far as setup, it wasn’t that bad, except for a little hyperactive fog machine. There were only 7 people there; I feel kind of bad about that. I didn’t stay any longer than I needed to grab a cookie, but I might had stayed longer if there were more people.

Honestly though, I’m not surprised. Besides the fact that it is a weekday night and everyone has class tomorrow, I don’t imagine that valentines dances could succeed more than any other dance. I would guess that Valentines Day isn’t exactly everyone’s favorite holiday, so why would a valentines dance be predestined to success? Those who are looking forward to celebrating valentines day, probably have a significant other, and thus don’t need a dance as an excuse to dance. Those who don’t have significant others, probably aren’t so excited about the whole valentines thing anyway, and consequently are not the most likely to be excited about a valentines dance.
