I’m pretty critical sometimes on my blog here about the various things that people do wrong. Tonight I want to mention something I think is a good idea.
Many apartment places threaten their residents during cleaning inspections. University Villa the last few months has found a positive way of encouraging residents to pass their monthly cleaning checks during the first inspection. Every month they do a drawing of people who passed their checks the first time, and 5 people win free pizzas. This is a great simple way of encouraging people to keep their apartments orderly. It is far better business to encourage people this way than by threatening them with punishments for failing to complete their cleaning assignments.
By the way, there are still negative consequences for not passing cleaning checks, but they aren’t the focus of the encouragement.

Almost as bad as halloween dances are valentines dances.
University Villa tried having a valentines dance tonight. As far as setup, it wasn’t that bad, except for a little hyperactive fog machine. There were only 7 people there; I feel kind of bad about that. I didn’t stay any longer than I needed to grab a cookie, but I might had stayed longer if there were more people.
Honestly though, I’m not surprised. Besides the fact that it is a weekday night and everyone has class tomorrow, I don’t imagine that valentines dances could succeed more than any other dance. I would guess that Valentines Day isn’t exactly everyone’s favorite holiday, so why would a valentines dance be predestined to success? Those who are looking forward to celebrating valentines day, probably have a significant other, and thus don’t need a dance as an excuse to dance. Those who don’t have significant others, probably aren’t so excited about the whole valentines thing anyway, and consequently are not the most likely to be excited about a valentines dance.
Actually, the title of this post should be negated. The problem is that something that should suck, doesn’t. Vacuums.
Today I was putting Dilbert, my plant, into a new hanging pot, and I spilled some planting soil on the ground. I thought I would vacuum it up, but University Villa only has a couple of vacuums that must be checked out of the office, which means trying to find the office open, which can be difficult, even during posted office hours.
But today, I actually found the office open on my first try, and so I checked out a vacuum. The problem is that the belt was broken on the vacuum so it didn’t work. So I took it back to the office, which was still open, and got a different vacuum. However, this alternate vacuum also had a broken belt, so it didn’t work either. But by this time, the office was closed for the day, so I still have a dirty carpet.

I met someone new who just moved into University Villa at church today. He was relating their experiences with moving into the villa. They said how they checked the University Villa website which said that they were open on Saturdays, so he tried to move in on Saturday, but when he arrived here, the office was closed. So then I guess he left a message and went off to watch the BYU game because there was nothing else to do. Halfway through the game I guess he got a call saying that there was someone in the office and that he had to come immediately. When he arrived back at University Villa, they told him that while he applied online, they didn’t have any open apartments for him to move into. But they were finally able to find someone selling their contract and get him moved in.
Kids, I’m not making this stuff up! Even someone completely new around here figures out quite quickly that University Villa doesn’t quite have their act together. I mean, this place is a fairly large complex, so you would think that they would be pretty practiced about how to run things around here, but they don’t.
So long to promises that things would get better around here.

I figured I needed to post something in my blog, but I couldn’t figure out what. So here is a photo. It describes some of what it is like to live in University Villa.

On a different note, the weekend is just a couple of days away. It sure came faster than I thought it would. I feel unprepared.

Well I had a pretty good experience with University Villa today. It is nice to have something good happen here, so I thought I would write it in my blog. Scott came through our apartment today and made a list of various repairs that needed to be done, including a new stove.
But what was really great were the maintenance guys. Kyle and Ben were the names the the guys. They did a really great job. I haven’t inspected the quality of their work — I’m sure its pretty good. What really impressed me was that they were fast with getting on the job. I mean, Scott came through the apartment this morning and they had things fixed up the same day. Same day service is impressive. What was also really impressive is that they were great at explaining things. They seemed to take pride in their work. They showed me the work they had done and make sure that it met my expectations.
Anyway, if the service for fall and winter is like it was today, I will probably be glad that I signed a contract here.
