My DARPA team is a semifinalist

Congratulations to the University of Utah and BYU DARPA Urban Grand Challenge team. DARPA has selected 36 teams as semifinalists to compete, and the U/Y team is one of them.

The University and Utah and BYU teamed up about a month ago to work collectively on their entry, and now they will compete in October for one of the 20 finalist spots.

I participated with the team up until a month ago, when my classwork and finances dictated a smaller contribution of time to the project.

Life is a highway

Some people write in secret blogs. Some people write so cryptically that no one understands what they are saying anyway. Tonight I hope to achieve both.

I love clean teeth. I mean, I love it when my teeth are clean. I guess I also like it when others teeth are clean, but that takes second place to my own teeth being clean. Fortunately, I haven’t come across appropriate occasion to share a life-saver.

I think I’ve gained some weight this week. Too many pies, cookies, and thanksgiving food. Too little exercise. Maybe the time is appropriate to enact certain plans to keep this putative weight gain from being a problem.

I mentioned a few days earlier that I think I’ve discovered my evil proclivity toward procrastination. I think I get some sort of adrenalin rush off of trying to do things at the last moment. As with many other addictions, there are side effects, and I think at times my addiction messes up my emotional balance. It also causes stress. Fortunately, I’ve gotten pretty good at dealing with this, but that doesn’t mean that over time it can’t wear me down if I don’t seek help in some way or another. It should be a red flag if TV commercials can cause allergic eye reactions. That is unless the commercial happens to be one of those LDS “family: its about time” commercials. They always get me. Actually, there is only about one thing that has a chance to get me, and it is displays of selflessness and love toward others. I’m off topic now, but the point is that I need to find some way to get myself off this addiction.

Sometimes living on a rainy island, isolated from the fears and tears, is worse than riding out the hurricane. Mixing metaphors like it is chocolate chip cookie dough, the seeds being to create new bridges between the worlds. When I reach the other side, will I recognize myself as the person who was worthy enough to harvest the crop? I once thought that I was missing something like crazy nothing, until I found that life-savers dissolve more quickly than one would like. Now I’m afraid to desire that which is departed with fears that I may find the well traveled path. Me and my gang were never enough to resolve the disputes between the heart, fingers, and eyes. Jumping off the train is always scarier than jumping on, but not any more severe than the fright of unknowingly staying on. Angels to comfort; seeing single rather than double; you can help. When I hear the song, I can’t help but to think what if you and I forgot that friendship on the cold night when stars fell from the sky. The most important thing to remember is you. Electrical pulses dancing on the lines, please show me the directions and show me the signs.

Why BYU will beat Utah

Because I won’t be there to see it. The last two times BYU beat Utah in football were 2000 and 2001, which were the two seasons that I served my mission in Romania. My freshman year, 1999, BYU lost.

This year I’m in Oregon studying, which means that BYU will probably win because once again I won’t be there to see it.

BYU apparel

March madness is just around the corner. Unfortunately, when it comes to Basketball, March isn’t quite as fun because there are fewer home games. From now on (until next year), all my basketball will be on TV.

I was looking at BYU apparel (shirts and caps mostly) and found that Amazon.com has fairly competitive prices. I’m not looking into buying anything right now, but maybe next year I’ll get something.

Anyway, there is a nice BYU/UofU basketball rivalry on Thursday. I think that Utah was the last team to beat BYU, but that was only because so many of our players were sick. I’m making a victory cake, and anyone who wants to view the game is welcome over at my place to watch the game and eat cake. The game is a late one — it starts at about 10, but you are welcome over.

Congradulations to the BYU basketball game for their win over the University of Utah. Although there weren’t a lot of people in the Marriott Center, it was a great game with a great feeling and lots of energy. Thank you to both teams for a very entertaining game.

My eyes aren’t the best, but I think I say Elder Perry at the game. He seemed to enjoy the game so much, it was very exciting. He was cheering and participating just as much as any other fan there, perhaps more than some. It was really great. Even President Samuelson who often remains pretty stoic at the basketball games seemed to enjoy it.

When I got there, there was someone in my seat. Usually all-sport pass holders just get general admission, but for this game they distributed tickets for actual seats. When we arrived, there were people in our seats, but we talked to them for a second and they were polite and moved for us. Thanks to those people, sorry we made you move.

As I watched the Ute’s starting quarterback Brian Johnson get injured in their game against New Mexico last week, I began to wonder what it would mean to the Holy War football game this weekend. Since that time, the Utes have closed their football practices to the press, and BYU is busy trying to find as much material on the Utah backup QB as they can.

I have some general thoughts about what this will mean for the game. It could mean a lot as far as turnovers. Our defense has been getting better and better about forcing turnovers. I think that we could see a fair number of Utah turnovers during the game. I think we will probably see some on 3rd down when Utah would be trying to convert.

I also think that Utah will have some great plays, mostly in the first half, that are going to make cougar fans bite their fingernails. Utah is going to come to Cougar Town with some new plays and strategies that we’ve never seen before and a level of desparation that might remind us of a 4th quarter against Air Force.

But I think the second half of the game is going to be all blue. I think Utah will have used up their bag of tricks all in the first half, and are going to be shut down during the second half. The cougars might need half of a game to discover who this readjusted Utah team is, but after that, it will be solid offense and many scoring opportunities.

Of course, a new QB for Utah could mean that they don’t have as much experience with communication. I think communication is going to be a task for the Utah O-line. This is one place where a blue stadium will be an advantage. If the fans can get loud every time the Utes are on offense, then they will have a much more difficult time communicating, and their offense will break down and make mistakes.
