I think we all probably manage our email in different ways. I’m usually the type that only ever looks at the top of the unread message list and goes on with life not worrying what messages might be left around.
However, recently I found that I’ve accumulated 2500 messages in my inbox. I’m not sure it is necessarily a bad thing, but it is something I’m trying to fix.
I use Gmail, which has a great archive feature. I can archive the email message, getting it out of my inbox, but without deleting it. The messages are still available through search, or through any labels which have been applied to the message.
I think sorting out the inbox will take me a while–to go through 2500 messages, but I’m making progress. Maybe sometime by Christmas I’ll actually see the bottom of it.

It’s been 9 months, and I’ve reduced my inbox from 2500 messages to less than 600. Of course, I keep on getting messages in my inbox, which means I’ve had to file away way more than just 2000 messages.
