Life Tracker

Posted in Technicalon Dec 12, 2006

As a software engineer, I use a project management tools like Trac to manage different aspects of my project, such as roadmaps, milestones, issues, documents, and the source.

I wonder, what if these software development tools were to be applied to a different type of project called: life.

We all have issues, although we more commonly call them tasks or to-do items.  We need to renew our drivers license, read a book, or prepare a presentation.  Wouldn’t it be interesting to keep track of these tasks in an issue tracker? Tasks could be assigned priorities, given deadlines, or placed into categories.

We also have major goals in our lives.  For me, some of my goals are graduating, finishing a book, or becoming a better writer.  These life goals all of a sudden seem like software milestones.

You could even put general notes about life into a wiki.

What other ideas could be integrated into such a life development management suite?

Of course as a warning to someone who might actually try this: you might want to think about privacy.  Best people out there don’t know that you have “getting married” as one of your “high priority” issues.

Take a look at Backpack from 37signals. I use it all the time. What I want to though is something to help me track recurring items … like exercising x amount x times per week, keeping a steady bedtime/uptime, brushing and flossing. Most people don’t care to keep track of that, but I’d like to – and then have trends/graphs available too.
