Cooking on campus

I saw this from a BYU Police Beat:

Oct. 4 – A woman was reported grilling chicken in the library. She said it was for a project requiring students to break a social norm.

I have to say, that is a little better than the time that I baked bread in the Computer Science T.A. offices in the basement of the Talmage building. I had everything measured out in a bread maker. Brought it all in and plugged in the bread maker, and had bread a couple of hours later.

Baking bread

Recently I was able to purchase a bread machine at Deseret Industries for only $5. It took me a few tries to get a good loaf of bread to come out of the machine, but now I’m enjoying soft, warm, delicious bread. Here is the recipe that I used, with the ingredients listed in the order I added them:

  • 1 + 1/3 cup warm (but not hot) water
  • 1 teaspoon Western Family lemonade mix (optional)
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 3 cups bread flour
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 2 teaspoons salt, added to one of the corners before mixing. Use less salt (but at least 1 teaspoon) to give more lift
  • 2 tablespoons nonfat dry milk mix, or replace 1/3 cup of the water with 1/3 cup milk
  • 3 tablespoons margarine, divided and placed in each of the corners before mixing
  • 2 + 1/8 teaspoons of active yeast, placed in a well in the middle of the flour before mixing
